Ring Roads or By-pass roads are built around megacities to help prevent traffic congestion in urban centers. The main focus of these ring roads is to facilitate transporters and commuters reach their desired intercity destinations without having the need to go through busy streets and roads of a highly urbanized city. In Pakistan, Lahore is a metropolitan that has a comprehensive ring road network that allows the commuters, goods transporters, and public transport to utilize it in order to reduce traveling time to the desired destination. Many small cities all over Pakistan, especially those lying on the main GT Road N-5, have their own bypasses that let the traffic use them instead of going inside the cities.

The Current Scenario of RRR

The incumbent government, however, has taken the initiative to prevent this mega project of RRR from gathering further dust. Since the government came into office, special emphasis has been laid on the construction, development and growth sectors of Pakistan. Recently, an amnesty for construction industry was introduced that let the developers and builders become legal tax filers without having to declare their sources of income. In the same way, Rawalpindi Development Authority has been issued directives from Prime Minister’s office to complete all the pending important civic projects and facilitate the developers, builders and public at large with one window operations.

In continuum of the efforts by the Government, the Rawalpindi Development Authority has finally approved the revamped alignment of RRR. The realignment of the upcoming Rawalpindi Ring Road has set the termination point at Sangjani. In previous feasibilities, The Rawalpindi Ring Road was either to terminate at Chakri or Thallian motorway interchanges. The new ring road plan alignment will now be 66KM in length. The New Rawalpindi Ring Road will initiate from Radio Pakistan on Lahore – Rawalpindi section of the GT road will go all the way to Sangjani Toll Plaza. During its course, it will bisect the Rawat – ChakBeli Road, Adyala – Rawat Link Road, Chakri Road, Motorway and end at the helm of the Margalla Avenue. The Islamabad section of the ring road is also planned and it will be commissioned after the completion of main Ring Road in 2023. As per sources and news reports, the Islamabad – Rawalpindi section of the ring road will embark from BharaKahu till Radio Pakistan on N-5

Prime Features of Rawalpindi Ring Road

The Rawalpindi Ring Road is not just a road. According to our sources at RDA and Works division, the development and construction of this road will deploy a whole new sub-urban eco-system. There will be at least 2 Special Economic Zones developed with the ring road. These economic zones will be primarily built for industries that heavily rely on heavy transport in order to move their goods and commodities. The industries in these economic zones can include heavy machinery manufacturing unites, vehicle assembly plants and food packaging and processing units etc. Apart from development of these special economic zones alongside the ring road, RDA and Punjab Government also plan to develop 3 or more housing societies. As per our sources, these housing societies will be developed on public-private partnership bases and their main purpose is to reduce the urbanization burden in urban sectors of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Apart from this, the ring road will have multiple interchanges with Rawat – Chakbeli road, motorway, Adyala road and Girja road etc. to facilitate the movement of commuters and transporters. All in all, the Rawalpindi Ring Road is not only a mega transport and logistical project but also it will act as a catalyst for economic and social uplift of the twin cities.

Rawalpindi Ring Road and Real Estate

The upcoming Rawalpindi Ring Road will have a positive effect on the real estate of the twin Cities.
